Just to be sure, the Tigers have to win and win big against Oman and Papua New Guinea

Bangladesh’s shocking defeat against Scotland has left them in a complicated situation to qualify for the super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh will face hosts Oman and Papua New Guinea in their last two matches and the Tigers have to win those two.

But just winning two matches will not be enough to go through to the next round as there is a chance that from four teams of this group, three could end with four points.

In that case, two teams will qualify with superior run rate.

Oman are in a good position after just one match as they won that by a huge margin.

The Omanis won by 10 wickets and more importantly, they chased down their target with 38 balls to spare.

Their run rate is now +3.135, while Scotland’s is +0.3 and Bangladesh’s -0.3.

Provided Bangladesh win their next two matches, here are the equations for Bangladesh to qualify for the next round:

What if Scotland win their remaining two games?

Scotland will play PNG and Oman in their remaining games. If the Scots win these two then they will have six points, and qualify for the main round. In that case, Bangladesh’s points will be four, and they will also progress.

What if Scotland win against PNG and lose against Oman?

If Scotland win against PNG and lose against Oman, then their points tally will be four. On the other hand Oman will also have four points along with Bangladesh. In that case, the equation of run rate will be taken into account and as already mentioned, Oman have a better run rate due to their huge margin of victory in the first match.

So just winning two matches will be enough for Bangladesh if only Scotland win their three games.

If Scotland lose any one of their games then Bangladesh will have to maintain a better run rate.

Bangladesh and PNG’s match will take place Thursday afternoon and Oman and Scotland game will be held in the evening.

So Bangladesh have no option but to wait and hope for a favorable run rate scenario.

The conclusion is Bangladesh will obviously need to win their remaining two games but that might not be enough.

So just to be sure, the Tigers have to win and win big against Oman and PNG.
