Bangladesh hunt 4-1 series win sans Shakib, Mustafizur

Shakib, Mustafizur and Saifuddin are likely to be rested with Shamim, Shariful and Tasking coming in

Bangladesh are likely to be without all-rounder Shakib al Hasan and left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman when they take on visitors New Zealand in the last game of the five-match T20I series at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Friday.

As per team sources, the team management is mulling to rest both Shakib and Mustafizur.

Having won the series already 3-1, the team would get the chance to do some experiment before heading to the T20 World Cup next month.

Shakib is dealing with pain in fingers in an old injury and rest for the left-arm spinner had become a necessity.

Mustafizur along with all-rounder Saifuddin are likely to be rested to give match time to pacers Shariful Islam and Taskin Ahmed.

Young Shamim Hossain is likely to come in place of Shaki

Bangladesh can also think of getting third opener Soumya Sarkar some time in the middle in place of all-rounder Mahedi Hasan.

Shakib’s wait to emerge as the first player to score 12,000 runs and claim 600 international wickets simultaneously and also being the highest wicket-taker in T20 international cricket, going past Lasith Malinga’s 107 wickets, prolonged.

Shakib needs two wickets to reach the two milestones and this can now only be achieved during the T20 World Cup, set to be held between October 18 to November 15 in Oman and United Arab Emirates.

Focus once again will be on Bangladesh’s batting that has been below-par against both Australia and New Zealand.

The debate still remains regarding the surfaces used for the nine matches played across the two series.

Despite the games being set as preparation for the T20 World Cup, Bangladesh chose to take home advantage playing on slow, low and turning wickets to grab wins.

The team management believes the winning habit will help Bangladesh in the world event and that they have adequate time for their batters to buckle up before heading to Oman.

In the four games against New Zealand, Mahmudullah has scored the most, 97 runs with a strike rate of 97 backed by an unbeaten 43 in the winning cause in the fourth game.

Opener Mohammad Naim follows the Bangladesh T20I captain with 82 runs with a strike rate 82.82.

Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim continue trying to find form.

Mushfiq, who stepped down from keeping duty in the series, in four games got to score in just two and got dismissed for duck in the other two games.

This must be eating away Mushfiq on the inside as he chose to have a light practice session in Mirpur Thursday, despite the team opting to rest on the day.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will look to leave Dhaka with a consolation win to carry some confidence when they travel to Pakistan for their next task.

The tourists found positives in the series after winning the third game against Bangladesh but throughout, they have been found wanting mostly due to failure by the batting unit.

The team led by wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham will expect its top- and middle-order to do the job and finish on a winning note.

Bangladesh probable XI:

Mohammad Naim, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah (C), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan (WK), Shamim Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, Shariful Islam, Taskin Ahmed
