Shakib also believes winning matches prior to the T20 World Cup will definitely help the team to perform better in the big stage

All-rounder Shakib al Hasan admitted that the wicket of the first match between hosts Bangladesh and visiting New Zealand was more difficult compared to the wickets that were used against Australia where the Tigers won the low-scoring series by 4-1 margin.

“I think the wicket was more difficult than the Australia series. But we bowled really well and also bowled on a good channel. As New Zealand players are not used to these kind of wickets and conditions, so naturally they struggled at the middle,” Shakib said to the media after the match.

The Kiwis were bundled out for just 60 runs, their joint lowest total in T20Is, and Shakib bowled a brilliant spell taking two wickets conceding just 10 runs in his quota of four overs.

Shakib also scored 25 runs on this difficult wicket and built a small but important partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim which enabled Bangladesh to win the match comfortably in the end with seven wickets in hand.

As a batsman Shakib shared his thoughts as to how to score runs on these kind of tricky surfaces.

“It’s important to take singles as much as possible. We need to be sharp in running between the wickets as scoring boundaries in these kind of wickets is really difficult. You also need to be in a positive frame of mind in these tough conditions. You have to wait for the loose ball to score boundaries as well.”

Before Wednesday's match Bangladesh had won six matches in the last two T20I series, two against Zimbabwe away and four against Australia at home.

And having taken a 1-0 lead in the series, the Tigers are eyeing more wins before the upcoming T20 World Cup which will start from October.

Playing on these kind of slow pitches just prior to the T20 World Cup raised a few eyebrows, considering that wickets in the mega event are likely to be more batting friendly.

But Shakib believes winning matches prior to the T20 World Cup will definitely help the team to perform better in the big stage.

“The most important matter is, we have won the match. I can remember, before the 2007 World Cup, we won quite a few ODI matches which gave us a lot of confidence. That helped us a lot to perform in the World Cup.

“So I think, these wins in recent times will boost our confidence to perform better in the forthcoming T20 World Cup,” Shakib concluded.
