Bangladeshi swimmers Junaina Ahmed and Ariful Islam were eliminated from the primary round of their respective events at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 Friday, but both registered their best career timings.
Ariful, who has been undergoing higher training in France currently courtesy of an International Olympic Council scholarship, finished the 50m freestyle in 24.81s to finish third among eight competitors.
His previous best was 24.92s that he clocked during the World Swimming Competition in South Korea.
Ariful, who got a wildcard to appear in the tournament, finished 51st among 73 swimmers, and only 16 will qualify for the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Junaina, who lives in London, finished the 50m freestyle in 29.78s.
She improved her previous best of 30.96s that she registered during the World Swimming Competition in 2019 in South Korea.
Junaina finished 68th among 81 swimmers.
