Ace Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan has touched heights in the game that no other cricketer in the country has ever been able to. But at the same time, the 34-year old has been at the center of major controversies, the latest being the three-match suspension and Tk5 lakhs fine for breaching Bangladesh Cricket Board's code of conduct twice during his team Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited’s game against Abahani Ltd in the ongoing Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League Twenty20 Friday at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
The list below highlights a few of the many controversies for which Shakib made the headlines:
2010 – Indecent behavior with crowd
This was probably the first time Shakib was hit with controversy. The left-handed batsman while batting in the fourth innings against India in Mirpur lost his temper towards a member of the crowd standing next to the side screen. The cricketer ran to the sight screen and was abusive towards the fan.
2011 - Indecent gesture towards fans during World Cup
Bangladesh were all-out for a humiliating 58 runs against the West Indies in Dhaka. The spectators from the stands were taunting and booing the Bangladesh cricketers which Shakib had failed to receive well and ended up showing the middle finger towards the galleries.
2013 – Catching spectator by the collar
Shakib was found guilty of catching a spectator by the collar during a domestic tournament. It was alleged Shakib had turned down request for an autograph coming from the spectator. The spectator in return criticized the star cricketer after which Shakib went to the gallery to catch the spectator by the collar.
2014 – Suspended for three international matches
Shakib was disappointed having lost his wicket against Sri Lanka in the second ODI. The camera was focused on Shakib in the dressing room as the commentators spoke of the dismissal. Shakib looking at the camera hinted indecent gesture and this saw the cricketer receive a three-match suspension.
2014 – Assaulting spectator in the stands, suspended for six months
A spectator at the VIP Grand Stand had harried Shakib’s wife, Ummey Ahmed Shishir, during the first ODI against India in Dhaka. Shakib was reported to have left the dressing room during the game to find the spectator and physically assault him. This incident had stirred big controversy and saw Shakib receive six-month suspension sanctioned by BCB.
2015 – One-match suspension in BPL T20
Shakib was found breaching the code of conduct during his team Rangpur Riders’ game against Sylhet Superstars. Umpire Tanvir Ahmed had turned down an appeal which Shakib couldn’t accept. A disciplinary action saw the cricketer get suspended for a game.
2016 – Yet another incident with the umpires
Dhaka Dynamites captain Shakib lost control over an umpire’s decision. Shakib was seen abusing the on-field umpire though this did not result in any disciplinary enquiry.
2017 – Pulling out from tour of South Africa
Shakib asked for a six-month leave ahead of Bangladesh’s tour of South Africa. The cricketer had informed the BCB he needed the break to overcome mental fatigue. But the then national team head coach Chandika Hathurusingha denied the leave. The board later grated a three-month leave.
2018 – Leaving for CPL without NOC
Shakib this year travelled to West Indies without a No Objection Certificate from BCB. The board called Shakib back to the country following which he had threatened to quit playing for Bangladesh. This resulted in the cricketer receiving six-month suspension from international cricket.
2019 – Missing out on team photo session ahead of the World Cup
The star cricketer was absent during the official photo session despite being at the home of cricket in Mirpur on the day of the shoot. Shakib left the venue around an hour before the team photo was taken and stirred yet another controversy. Many claimed the action was a sign of disrespect to the remainder of the team.
2019 – A year-ban by ICC
Shakib was handed a two-year ban, with one year of that suspended, by the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption Unit in 2019, for not reporting multiple corrupt approaches by an Indian bookmaker. Shakib admitted to the charges brought against him by the ICC.
2021 – Plays IPL T20, not for Bangladesh
Shakib was on the receiving end of criticism after the cricketer chose to play in the money-spinning Indian Premier League T20, and not for Bangladesh on the tour of Sri Lanka for two Test matches.
2021 - Breach of bio-secured bubble
Shakib and his team Mohammedan were warned by the BCB and Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis for breaching the bio-security environment during a practice session in Mirpur in the ongoing Dhaka League. While batting in the nets, Shakib was accompanied by net bowlers who are not part of the bio-bubble. There was also an unidentified man seen mingling with those in the nets and taking photos during the practice session.
