The third round of the first-class cricket tournament, the National Cricket League, has been postponed for an indefinite period due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in Bangladesh, and the overall situation in the country.

"The tournament committee of Bangladesh Cricket Board has deferred the start of the next round of matches of the Bangabandhu 22nd National Cricket League to a later date. Two rounds of the eight-team NCL has been completed already. Schedule for matches from the third round onwards will be announced later," said a BCB media release.

Bangladesh recorded its highest ever daily Covid-19 cases Thursday, after 6,469 infections were confirmed in the preceding 24 hours, while the country also logged the most deaths - 59 - on a single day since June 30 last year.

After the gradual increase in Covid-19 cases, tourists spots, including NCL host venue Cox's Bazar, among other public places were closed for at least two weeks, largely impacting movement in the coastal town, and resulting in BCB's decision.

Dhaka and Dhaka Metropolis top tier one and two respectively after the first two rounds.
