Tamim: If we continue playing like this, we're going nowhere

Tamim admitted that the players need to take the blame and it’s the inconsistent performance that has been haunting them in away tours time and time again over the years

Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal admitted that the way the Tigers surrendered against the Kiwis in the first and third game of the series, if they continue playing like this they're going nowhere.

The Tigers were outplayed by the hosts in every department as they were bundled out for just 154 chasing 319 in the third ODI, and thus suffered a 3-0 whitewash.

"In the first game and in the last game, we were nowhere close to them (New Zealand). They played exceptionally well. But we are a much better team (than this kind of performance). If we continue to play like this, then we are going nowhere," Tamim said during the post match press conference in Wellington Friday.

"We understand it’s a different condition here compared to back home. But we have to improve a lot to compete. If we took out the second game, we never looked like we were competing with them, which is very disappointing. I had very high hopes, I thought we definitely had a good chance in the series. We had a chance in the second game. But overall it’s a disappointing series for us.

"We started pretty well (Friday). We put them under a little bit of pressure. They were 53 for three. But then again we did not utilize the small chances that came towards us. Devon Conway and Daryll Mitchell batted exceptionally well, I'm not taking any credit away from them. But at the same time I thought we gave too many boundary balls."

The Tigers skipper believes the approach and application in batting while chasing was poor from the Bangladesh batsmen.

Hosts New Zealand have defeated Bangladesh by 164 runs during their third and final one-day international of the series to make a 3-0 clean sweep in Wellington Friday.

"The way we got out (Friday), apart from one or two dismissals, others were too many soft dismissals. We knew the ball would do something in New Zealand earlier in the innings. It was a good example in the second game when our total was around 25-26 in the first 10 overs but we managed to accelerate later. New Zealand surface might be difficult to start but it gets really better later. Actually we did not allow ourselves to bat deep. And we have ourselves to blame," said Tamim.

Tamim admitted that the players need to take the blame and it’s the inconsistent performance that has been haunting them in away tours time and time again over the years.

"You can have the best coaches in the world, but in the end it's the players who need to understand what to do and what not to do in the middle," said Tamim.

"The problem with us, especially in overseas conditions is that we are not consistent. Not consistent as a team or not consistent as a player. That’s an issue and we have to find a way to fix it,” he concluded.

Tamim will return home before the T20 series due to personal reasons.

Bangladesh will take on the Kiwis in the three T20s Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday in Hamilton, Napier and Auckland respectively.
