Belfort scored the all-important goal in the 85th minute
Six-time champions Abahani Limited made a winning start in the Bangladesh Premier League season despite a resolute show by Police FC at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Thursday.
The Sky Blues were almost on the verge of losing points but their Haitian striker Kervens Belfort turned out as their savior as he scored the all-important goal in the 85th minute.
Throughout the match Abahani controlled possession and missed a couple of close chances but in the late stage of the game, Police goalkeeper failed to grasp a powerful shot of Rubel Mia and Belfort scored a tap in.
Police, who fought neck and neck throughout the game, got a golden chance to restore parity in the very next minute but their Kyrgyz recruit Murolimzhon Akhmedov’s shot hit the crossbar and Abahani returned with full three points.
