Jewel scored in the either side of each half while Saighani marked his return in style with Abahani's first goal of the season
Jewel Rana scored a brilliant brace in Abahani Limited’s thrashing 3-0 win over arch-rival Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited in the season’s first Dhaka derby, at the Federation Cup 2020, at Bangabandhu National Stadium Thursday.
The winger scored in the either side of each half while Afghanistan defender Masih Saighani marked his return in style with the club’s first goal of the season, along with a superb assist in the Group D opener.
It was Abahani’s second straight victory over the Black and Whites.
They also won the previous encounter by a big margin (4-0) in their Bangladesh Premier League fixture in March.
The Sky Blues can hope for better output from Jewel this season as the 24-year old also netted a brace in their lone pre-season friendly against Uttar Baridhara Club.
Nigerian striker Sunday Chizoba is not here at Abahani for the first time in five years.
His replacement, new Brazilian signing Francisco Torres started as center-forward with Nabib Newaj Jibon behind him, and Jewel and Kervens Belfort on the wing.
New Brazilian midfielder Raphael Augusto was not picked.

Mohammedan also started with three foreigners – Malian Souleymane Diabate as striker, Burkina Faso’s Mounzir Coulidiati in defence and Japanese Uryu Nagata in defensive midfield.
Nigerian midfielder Abiola Nurat came off the bench to replace injured Shamal Bepari in the 28th minute.
Belfort scored twice in their last meeting.
The Haitian winger had a couple of chances around the half-hour mark; first, his backheader went over, second, went straight to the goalkeeper Suzan Hossain.
In between these, Mohammedan’s Bepari went close once with a header flying inches over.
Rayhan Hasan’s long throw-ins caused trouble to Mohammedan defence constantly.
It was from one of those Saighani headed home the lead in the 40th minute.
Saighani previously played for Abahani during the 2018-19 season and was key behind the club’s unprecedented success in the AFC Cup.

He then moved to Indian Super League outfit Chennaiyin FC but couldn’t carry on the same form there.
Creating chances and scoring from set-pieces were among Saighani’s areas of expertise.
Partnering with Tutul Hossain Badshah in center-half, the 34-year old versatile defender utilized his height to clear away some set-piece threats and his contribution to the second goal was outstanding.
Saighani attempted a bycycle kick on Jibon’s cheeky lob.
It was going straight to the keeper but Jewel changed the direction with a side header leaving Mohammedan custodian Suzan puzzled.
Jewel heaped more misery on their eternal rival eight minutes after the break.
Rayhan’s long throw was back-headed by Belfort and met Jewel near the far post and the star of the derby made no mistake from close range.
With the win, Abahani set one foot in the quarter-final before playing their last group match against Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra Wednesday.
