Bashundhara started preparation camp at least two months earlier than the other clubs in September
The defensive flaws of star-studded Bashundhara Kings started to get exposed from the knockout stages of the last Federation Cup in which they recovered well to win the title, but the inconsistency continued in the Bangladesh Premier League.
It was surprising to see the reigning champion concede nine goals in six matches of the league where they were sitting at the middle of the table before Covid-19 suspension came about in March.
The new powerhouse started preparation camp at least two months earlier than the other clubs in September.
All four foreign recruits are new but the local collections are almost same except a few fresh faces.
“Our standard of play has improved and progressed from previous seasons. We have this time a great collection of domestic and foreign players and a balanced squad,” head coach Oscar Bruzon told Dhaka Tribune.
“Nowadays our focus is on improving our defensive consistency through specific tactical work. The defensive demands of an attacking-based team are fundamental to dominate the games.”
The Spanish tactician continued while talking about his goal of the 2020-21 season, “The aim is and will be creating more openings and goal opportunities than our opponents rather than just going for clean sheets.”

Bruzon also admitted that having a long-term camp has helped them to improve different game areas and to develop specific individual skills of the players.
It was evident from Mahbubur Rahman Sufil’s goal against Nepal last month which the striker credited his mentor for the brilliant finish.
“It has also brought as benefits in terms of keeping a high and consistent game rhythm which will be a differential factor on a competition like the Federation Cup where we will be playing back to back games in a short period of time,” he added.
After missing the national players for around a month and a half due to the Fifa friendly series against Nepal and World Cup and Asian Cup joint qualifier against Qatar, all squad members are together before the season kicks off on December 22.
First-choice center-back Topu Barman is however, likely to miss the Federation Cup group round fixtures due to calf muscle injury sustained in Qatar, while full-backs Tariq Qazi and Sushanta Tripura are also facing uncertainty.
“Our team physios are taking close care and doing intensive treatment of these players in order to try to reduce the recovery times needed to reach the Federation Cup fully fit,” said Bruzon.
Good news is that Iranian defender Khaled Shafiei will be there to cover up Topu, while Matin Mia and Masuk Mia Jony are also set to return after long-term injury and rehabilitation.
Bashundhara Kings have come to an agreement with Iranian defender khaled shafiei, who is expected to arrive in Dhaka early next month as the club's fourth and last foreign recruit for the 2020-21 season.Posted by Sports Tribune on Saturday, 19 September 2020
“It’s a good thing we finally have all the squad together on training so the focus is on improving our game style together, challenging all our players to give their best in order to grant their participation on the opening game,” said Bruzon.
“Opponents know well now our game style so we are using this preparation time to provide to our players tools, ideas, references, automatisms and solutions to win the most of the games of the club season calendar.”
Costa Rican World Cupper Daniel Colindres, one of the top performers in the last two seasons, will not be there while former Argentine international Hernan Barcos also left the club after shining well in his only game during their debut AFC Cup game in March.
The Kings are set to unveil a new foreign trio up front.
Expectations are on Brazilian duo – midfielder Fernandez and winger Robinho – and Argentine striker Raul Becerra to carry on the club’s legacy and to fill the vacancy caused by the departure of the former stars.
Bruzon is optimistic, “The foreigners fulfill the game parameters and characteristics we wanted to cover on their specific positions.”
Raul and Robinho netted one each during the 3-1 win over Uttar Baridhara Club in the first pre-season practice match while veteran striker Towhidul Alam Sabuj added the other.
They are scheduled to play another game against Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited Tuesday.
