Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited have decided to release nine local footballers from the previous squad in a bid to strengthen the team for the forthcoming 2020-21 domestic season.
The nine players are - goalkeepers Mazharul Islam Hemel and Jashim Uddin, defenders Ousai Mong Marma, Abid Hossain and Humayan Kabir Khan, midfielders Rummon Hossain, Sohanur Rahman and Anik Ghosh, and former national forward Aminur Rahman Sajib.
The professional league committee earlier decided to support the cause of retaining the same local members from the 2019-20 season, when Premier League fixtures got suspended after only five rounds of play due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The clubs were asked to send the list of the players they want to release by 30 October deadline.
Only Mohammedan did so by Tuesday, informed BFF’s competition manager Zaber bin Taher Ansari.
Mohammedan football team manager Imtiaz Ahmed Nakib explained, “It was the decision of the coach [Sean Lane]. He wanted to keep 16 locals out of a total 30 from last season. It is based on their performance and the thoughts about the future.
“The released players will be replaced by promising young footballers. Some 15-20 players are primarily selected from Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Pratishthan and second-tier league [Bangladesh Championship League]. We know them but we have to see their condition again for few days before finalizing the contracts for long terms, may be for two-three years.”
Nakib, the former national striker, also said the matter would be further discussed in Saturday’s football committee meeting.
Mohammedan have been run by their former footballers, officials, members and well wishers since the casino crackdown in Dhaka landed the club’s former director in-charge Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan in jail.
The election is called for January, 9, 2021 where the new committee of the traditional club would be formed.
