Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo briefs the media in Mirpur Dhaka Tribune/Md Manik

Here are the excerpts of Domingo's exchange with the media in Mirpur Friday

Bangladesh cricket team head coach Russell Domingo spoke with the media during the opening day’s play of the first two-day practice match between the national cricketers at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Friday.

Here are the excerpts:

How challenging is it for the players to practice amid this pandemic?

There is always going to be a challenge. We have a big group of players at the moment. We are doing the same things over and over without having any goal in mind, and it can be very challenging sometimes. But that also allows ourselves to work with players’ skills. You can maybe change one or two technical things and discuss with the players in these times. So it’s challenging, but it has some benefits as well.

Any particular thing you are working on with the players in order to improve their skills?

I can say about Shadman (Islam) for example. We are trying to change his stance and back lift a little bit, that’s a small example. So these types of changes for a player are very difficult during a series or match. To adjust with the change, sometimes you need a couple of weeks or even months. That is one thing we are working on. Another example is Ottis [pace bowling coach Gibson] is working with Mustafizur [Rahman]. He is working with Fizz how to shape the ball back to the left-handers. That’s few of the examples of what we are working on.

There was a long break from cricket for the players, even in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 where batsmen are struggling to time the ball initially. How are Bangladesh players coping with it?

There is no substitute to playing competitive games. At the moment the best we can do is to prepare players for the national team by practice and train hard in nets. But that’s obviously different than playing an actual game. So we need to play many games as possible before returning to international cricket. Look, all teams are going through the same phase. All teams will face difficulties, may be face struggle during fielding or struggle in different elements of the game.

England have played some cricket. They probably have some advantage. But all other teams are facing the same problem. Maybe a few players are playing in the IPL. But collectively all the other teams are in the same position. We will have to be starting at the same point like others. So trying to find game time of high quality before international cricket is very important.

We have a group of around 20-25 players. The World T20I is a year away. It will be better if we can play quite a few T20 games before going to the World T20I. Because I don’t want to go to the World T20I after playing just four-five games. If we can play 20 or 30 T20 games as a group then it would be great. But like I said, all teams are in the same situation. We need to be patient. And we need to be smart about how we can move on.

How important is it to resume domestic cricket? Do you have any suggestions?

Perfect way to get back to international cricket is to play some domestic cricket. If we can play some matches in domestic cricket and play some competitive games, that makes the transition to international cricket so much easier. Going from friendly match to international cricket is a big step up. If you have some domestic cricket first then it will benefit the national side immensely. I know Bangladesh Cricket Board are planning about an ODI tournament. Nothing is confirmed yet, there is a talk about some domestic league maybe after next couple of weeks. If that happens then it will be helpful. I know there are some players outside this squad who are good players, I would love to see them play. Hopefully it will start after the next couple of weeks.
