The 32-year old wants to continue his career for a few more years, but the Covid-19 situation forced him to stop playing since the last national championship in January
Four-time national silver medalist athlete, Dipankar Roy opened up a flexi-load shop at his father’s pharmacy in Chirirbandar, Dinajpur to support his family in the pandemic days.
Once considered a promising talent at young age, Dipankar represented Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation in javelin throw event of athletics in the last decade.
He is one of some 250 BJMC athletes who lost their casual jobs in December last year.
The 32-year old wants to continue his career for a few more years, but the Covid-19 situation forced him to stop playing since the last national championship in January.
He is concentrating more on earning bead for his family in the tough times.
“Things became difficult after I lost the job, and it got worse during the corona days. I opened a flexi-load shop in my father’s pharmacy. Father’s health condition has been poor so I have to look after both for now,” said Dipankar over phone.
“I joined BJMC in 2006 and spent almost my whole career there. During an open trial for the South Asian Games 2010 in Dhaka, I became first and got into the national team. I rejoined BJMC after a year’s gap and won four silver medals in a row in the national championships followed by four-five bronzes afterwards.”
Bangladesh never bagged a medal in javelin throw at the SAGs.
Dipankar though came close, finishing fifth with a performance of 61.88m, and was guided by coach Mostafizur Rahman during the 2010 Games.
He later admitted to not having a coach of his event since then and had to depend on youtube and internet to carry on practice.
Eventually, he couldn’t better the 2010 result, which still remains his personal best.
“Now I’m planning to try my luck in business to support family and besides, train the young boys of my locality in javelin throw. Current situation is like I’m retired but I want to continue playing for two-three years more,” said Dipankar.
