The Waugh brothers, Steve (L) and Mark

On June 2, 2020, Mark and Steve Waugh turn 55 not out in the innings of their life

The top flight cricket has seen many brothers or even twins playing together in the same team and many of them made their indelible marks in the game but arguably the greatest ever twin till date in the cricket so far are the great Waugh brothers.

Mark Edward Waugh and Stephen Rodger Waugh, the famous twin brother from Australia has turned to 55 on this day, June 2, 2020.

Both the legendary players were part of the golden era of Australian cricket in ninety’s and early 2000s.

Steve captained that dominant Australia team which ruled in both formats almost as an invincible side and broke so many records in cricketing history.

Although they are twin, technically Mark was junior then Steve by two and a half minutes, but the in cricket difference was much more as they were two complete different characters with contrasting personalities and style.

As a batsman Mark is regarded as one of the most elegant and gifted stroke makers to ever play the game. He was a great entertainer with his good strike rate and improvising technique of scoring runs.

Often his batting had been termed as "lazy beauty".

Mark has 20 Tests and 18 ODI hundreds in his career with 8,029 and 8,500 runs respectively in those formats.

On the other hand Steve was not the most stylish but his virtue was tremendous grit.

He might not have as much talent and flair like his brother but he was the never say die type of guy and his stubbornness helped him fetch many runs.

Perhaps that’s why Steve has a better Test record with plenty of double hundreds and played 168 Test matches in his career with 10, 927 runs.

The elder Waugh scored 32 centuries and 50 fifties.

On the other hand, his ODI records are less attractive then Mark as he scored only three hundreds in 325 matches compare to Mark's 18 hundreds in ODIs.

One reason maybe Mark was an opener in ODIs while Steve batted in middle order in his entire career and initially was picked up as a lower-middle order batsman who can bowl some useful medium pace.

Mark and Steve have stunning first class records as batsmen as they have scored 26,855 and 24,052 runs in their entire career.

They also picked many wickets and again with contrast style as Steve was an accurate medium pacer while Mark used to roll his hands for some easy action off-spin.

One thing is sure no matter who scores how much century in Tests or in ODIs, Mark and Steve, the famous twin brother in the cricket history have entertained the cricket world and millions of fans in many occasions with their world class performances over the years in 90s and early 2000s.

And that’s why they have been regarded as greats in modern history of the game and rightly so.

On June 2, 2020, Mark and Steve turn 55 not out in the innings of their life.

Happy Birthday, Waugh bothers!
