Bangladesh Cricket Board has provided around Tk5 million for 501 vulnerable athletes, handing over cheques to the government as part of the BCB’s initiative to support sportspersons affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
Nazmul Hasan, the BCB president, handed over 501 cheques of Tk10,000 each to State Minister for Youth and Sports, Zahid Ahsan Russel Wednesday.
The cheques were distributed to sportsmen and women of 23 sports federations under the National Sports Council other than cricket, said a media release from BCB.
A total of Tk50,10,000 has been given to these federations.
Secretary for the Ministry of Youth and Sports Mohammad Akhtar Hossain and BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury were also present during the cheques handover.

Earlier this month, Sports Ministry announced to provide Tk10,000 each to 1,000 sportspersons as the first phase of its initiative to stand besides struggling athletes after getting instruction from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
It handed over cheques for 600 athletes to 24 sports federation out of which the funds for 501 individual were sponsored by the BCB.
In the presence of one athlete and one representative from each federation, the handover program was held at the new NSC building.
“I want to give special thanks to the Honorable Prime Minister for extending her helping hands for struggling athletes. PM instructed BCB to step forward to support athletes. My sincere gratitude to Nazmul Hasan for coming forward to help the vulnerable,” Russel was quoted as saying by a press release from the Ministry.
“We wrote to the Finance Ministry for more support. They gave us good feedback. Hopefully we can continue our support to more sportspersons after Eid-ul-Fitr.”
