Bangladesh Navy's Shirin Akter had won the 100m race on the opening day of the meet Thursday and completed the double with the 200m win in 24.7s with Bangladesh Army’s Sharifa Khatun finishing second in 25.6s
The country’s fastest female sprinter, Shirin Akter completed the double of 100m and 200m sprint in the National Athletics Championship, but sprinter Jahir Rayhan was not so lucky as the premier athletics Bangladeshi meet came to an end Saturday at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong.
Shirin had won the 100m race on the opening day of the meet Thursday and completed the double with the 200m win in 24.7s with Bangladesh Army’s Sharifa Khatun finishing second in 25.6s.
In the process, Bangladesh Navy’s Shirin buried the bitter memories of her second place finish in the last edition where Sohagi Akter pipped her to the gold medal after a photo finish.
Jahir, who won the 400m sprint Friday, missed out on the 200m race by a whisker to Navy’s Saiful Islam, who clocked 21s, ahead of the last edition winner’s 21.2s.
Meanwhile in the men’s 800m event, Navy’s Rakibul Islam finished first after clocking 1 min 58.7s while in the women’s category, Army’s Sumi Akter clocked 2 min 26.9s to emerge first.
Navy topped the standing with 21 golds, 18 silvers and eight bronzes, Army ended second with 14 golds and as many silvers and bronzes, while Ansar and Village Defence Party finished third with 1 gold and as many silver and two bronzes.
