The National Athletics Championship will be held without any athletic track or turf after 14 years as the 43rd edition of the meet gets underway on the grass and field of MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong Thursday.

Bangladesh Athletics Federation officials informed that they had to change the venue due to poor condition of the track of Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka where the athletics events take place regularly.

The track of BNS was installed in 2007 at the expense of around Tk10 crores and there were no major renovation works since then.

There are two more tracks in the country, one at Army Stadium in Banani and the other at BKSP in Savar.

“It is difficult to run with spikes on the track (BNS). Many portions of the turf are fractured, especially on the southern side. You can’t call it a turf. It expired six years ago. Athletes will only get injured there,” said BAF general secretary Abdur Rokib Montu Wednesday.

“We have two more national events this year and both will be held in Dhaka. It doesn’t matter much if we arrange one event on grass. We want to organize more events at other venues outside the capital,” Montu added.

Jessore and Mymensingh also hosted the national meet once each before.

Chittagong hosted the national athletics for the first time in 1985 and the last time it was held was in 2005.

There is no setup of electronic timing in the port city.

To add to that, the country’s sole sports institution, Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan is not participating in the three-day event owing to a lack of athletes at the senior level.

A total of 450 athletes from 43 teams including districts, divisions, universities, education boards and service teams will participate in 36 events including 22 for males and 14 for females.

The event is patronized by Chittagong Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin and assisted by Chittagong District Sports Association.
