Khulna Tigers waltzed to an eight-wicket victory over Rangpur Rangers at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium
The Rangpur Rangers’ frustration in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League T20 continued, as the side conceded their fourth defeat in as many games Friday.
The Khulna Tigers waltzed to an eight-wicket victory over the Rangers at Chittagong’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
The Rangers have roped in former Australian national team all-rounder Shane Watson for the latter half of the BBPL.
However, with the way the tournament is unfolding for the side, one may wonder if the signing will arrive in time to salvage the season.
Of the eight matches remaining, Rangers now need to win at least six to remain in contention for the second round of the tournament.
In contrast, the victory means the Khulna Tigers have now won all three of the matches they have played.
A sizzling unbeaten half century from number three batsman Rilee Rossouw brought home the win after a disciplined bowling display had paved the way.
The Rangers set a low target of 138 after the Tigers won the toss and elected to field first. Chasing the target, the Tigers only lost the wickets of their openers.
After Khulna opener Najmul Hossain Shanto was dismissed in the second over, his opening partner Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rilee put up a 61-run stand for the third wicket to lead the recovery.
Both Gurbaz and Rilee were carving the Rangpur bowlers apart when pacer Mukidul Islam removed the former after he had scored 37 runs off 22 deliveries, leaving Khulna on 85/2 after 6.4 overs.
The loss of the second wicket did not slow down the imperious Rilee Rossouw, who brought up his 25th half-century in the T20 format off just 23 deliveries.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim took the winning run in the 13th over, with Rilee not out on 66 off 31.
The blistering innings from Rilee included nine boundaries and two sixes. Mushfiq was unbeaten on 17 at the close of play.
Earlier, Rangpur had a good start with the bat as young opener Mohammad Naim added 49 runs off 32 balls.
Fazle Mahmud also kept the scoreboard ticking with 42 off 33 deliveries, but wickets at regular intervals kept the run rate in check.
Pacer Shafiul Islam was the pick of the bowlers for the Khulna Tigers with three wickets in four overs, conceding 21 runs.
Left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir and Shahidul Islam picked up two scalps each, restricting Rangers to a below-par target on a pitch that has proved prolific for the batsmen.
