Bashundhara Kings began their TVS Federation Cup 2019 campaign with a 1-0 win over Brothers Union in the opening match of Group B at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Thursday.

New signing Lebanese striker Mohamed Jalal Kdouh, who made his debut in Bangladesh during the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup, netted the all-important goal in the opening half.

Kdouh started as central forward with local forwards Mahbubur Rahman Sufil and Motin Mia on the wing.

Costa Rican World Cupper Daniel Colindres, who created three good chances, switched his position from wing to midfield.

Tajikistan defender Akhtam Nazarov started in midfield.

It took the reigning Bangladesh Premier League champion 23 minutes to get their first goal of the season.

A through pass from Colindres allowed Kdouh to break into the penalty area before placing the ball past onrushing goalkeeper Titumir Chowdhury.

Kdouh then went close to scoring twice in the next 10 minutes.

The Lebanese headed wide from a Colindres cross before another of his efforts was denied by the sidepost in the 33rd minute.

Argentine defender Nicolas Delmonte headed inches wide off the post following another Colindres cross in the 38th minute, while Motin hit the crossbar from a Kdouh cross a minute later.

Brothers were lucky not to concede another in the second half as well, thanks to Titumir, who produced a diving save to deny Delmonte’s powerful strike outside the box in the 59th minute, before blocking Colindres’ angular shot in the 79th minute.

Bashundhara’s Spanish coach Oscar Bruzon was content with the performance and result, but admitted that they need to improve their finishing skills.

“We played well in the first half but couldn’t avail all chances. It’s not a new problem, we are working on it and hopefully we will improve it in the next matches,” said Bruzon.
