The national amateur boxers has not taken a breather since their return from the 40-day training camp in Thailand last week.

Resuming their hard-work on the ring of Muhammad Ali Boxing Stadium in Dhaka, the top boxers poured words of confidence of earning Bangladesh its first South Asian Games gold medal in boxing away from home.

It would be the last time at an international competition for veteran boxer Abdur Rahim, who earned Bangladesh one of its two golds in Dhaka 2010 in the 64kg category.

The two other golds were also won when the SAG was held in Dhaka – Mozammel Haque in 1993 and Mosharraf Hossain in 1985.

Rahim, a Bangladesh Army boxer and BKSP graduate, is determined to conclude his colorful career with another gold, but also backed his in-form younger teammates for a positive outcome following the confidence they gathered from the helpful trip to Thailand boxing academy.

“It was one of the finest boxing academies I’ve seen. The accommodation, food and training facilities were miles ahead of us. There were top boxers from five countries including Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. We fought with them.  The main Cuban coach told us that we have the capability to win two golds in the SA Games,” said Rahim, who also had a one-month training camp in Thailand and Italy before the 2010 Games.

Rahim’s weight category changed to 69kg during the 2016 Games where he won a bronze out of Bangladesh’s tally of four.

When asked as to which Bangladeshi boxers have the best shot at a medal, the 29-year old mentioned the names of Mohammad Robin Mia, Sura Krishna Chakma, Arif Hossain and Sojib Hossain.

Robin, who will be participating in the 56kg category, was also full of confidence.

The 21-year-old said, “We worked hard to learn, perform well, and improved our game from the memorable Thailand camp. There were many coaches who taught us new techniques. Our main opponents are Indian boxers. I’ll fight for the gold but silver is almost certain.”

Sura, who claimed to be the first professional golfer of the country after six-month training in England back in 2015, would be taking part in the 60kg category.

“My performance was not upto the mark during my first international event in Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014. Now I’m more mature but still have to face stiff challenge from Indian boxer Shiva Thapa. Sri Lanka and Nepal also have good boxers,” said the 25-year-old.

The other boxers for the Nepal tour include Mohammad Ariful Islam and Mohammad Al Amin, alongside two female boxers Onita Islam and Shamima Akter.

Head coach Syed Mohiuddin Ahmed also expressed high hope that his boxers would win more medals than the previous edition.
