Shakib was banned for two years for breaching ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code
One of the most unfortunate occurrences has transpired in the history of Bangladesh cricket as Shakib al Hasan, Bangladesh Test and T20I captain, was banned for two years from cricket.
Shakib was banned, with one-year suspended, after he accepted three charges of breaching the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code of failing to disclose to the ACU or any other concerned authority in full details of any approaches or invitations he had received to engage in corrupt conduct.
One year of that ban is a suspended sentence that will take effect if Shakib fails to obey the code by the anti-corruption.
Following his ban , several members of the Bangladesh Cricket Team, as well as others cricketers along with Bangladeshi celebrities took to the social media to impart their opinions about the debacle.
Some excerpts of the reaction are as follows:
Unbelievable! Isn't it too harsh on Shakib? Was he involved in fixing?— Rahul Dravid (@DravidOfficial) October 29, 2019
I think his only fault was not to inform the ICC and Anti corruption unit about the match fixing proposal.
For that two years ban is a bit harsh. I hope ICC reconsider this decision.
The news of Shakib being banned for two years for failing to report "approaches to indulge in corrupt practices" is huge and terrible for the game in Bangladesh. Shakib is thier highest earning cricketer and was in the best position to set an example by reporting an offer— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) October 29, 2019
So Shakib Al Hasan’s ban has a lesson for all sports lovers and sportsmen: if you disregard the game and try to become bigger than the game by sidetracking the laid rules and protocols then be ready for a fantastic fall! Sad.— Ramiz Raja (@iramizraja) October 29, 2019
No sympathy what’s so ever for Shakib Al Hasan ... Non what’s so ever ... In this era the players get briefed all the time about what they can & cant do and what that have to report straight away ... 2 yrs isn’t enough ... Should have been longer ...— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) October 29, 2019
Sakib is surely best player and biggest figure ever in Bangladesh cricket. Easily the highest earning too. Why would he not report overtures made to him by bookies and leave himself vulnerable? Inexplicable— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) October 29, 2019
Shakib is a fine cricketer and an inspiration on and off the field. He will return even stronger. And please do remember he has been banned not for fixing but for failing to report approaches.— Joy Bhattacharjya (@joybhattacharj) October 29, 2019
My only sympathy is towards the cricket-loving people of Bangladesh who have been let down by a player who they've always placed on the highest of pedestals. For a player of Shakib's profile to not report an approach, is just ridiculous. It's an insult to his team & his fans.— Raunak Kapoor (@RaunakRK) October 29, 2019
Match-fixing was the worst thing to ever happen to cricket. Yet players fail to report when approached by bookies?— Gautam Chintamani (@GChintamani) October 29, 2019
If Steve Smith’s form can wash away his misdemeanours, what will #ShakibAlHasan’s return suggest? It’s okay to commit the crime. Everything else’s just conjecture?
Shakib Al Hasan - Bangladesh's best cricketer - being banned from all cricket for two years is shocking, but what's more shocking is that he chose not to disclose the approach to engage in corrupt conduct not once, but thrice!— Rajneesh Gupta (@rgcricket) October 29, 2019
Shakib’s suspension is terrible news for Bangladesh & deals their T20 World Cup campaign a massive blow. Bangladesh are favourites to join the group featuring India, England, South Africa & Afghanistan in the Super 12s & will be notably weaker without their talisman. #T20WorldCup— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) October 29, 2019
