Bangladesh Test and T20I captain Shakib al Hasan has been banned by the International Cricket Council from all cricket for a period two years, with one year of that period being suspended, after the ace all-rounder accepted three charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code

Bangladesh Test and T20I captain Shakib al Hasan has been handed a ban for two years, with one year of that suspended, by International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit.

The smoke over Shakib not participating in the ongoing national camp for the tour of India was cleared following the ICC media release Tuesday evening.

The ace cricketer accepted three charges of breaching the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code 2.4.4 of failure to disclose to ACU the full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in corruption.

Given Shakib has admitted to the offences charged by the ACU, there is no option for the Bangladesh cricketer to appeal against the ICC verdict and must serve a minimum one-year ban.

Shakib may return to cricket on October 29 next year by getting one year of the ban suspended by complying  in full the two conditions during the period of the initial 12-month ban.

Shakib in order to return to the game after one year must not commit any offence under the anti-corruption rules of any national cricket federation during the initial period of suspension, and he must participate promptly and fully in any anti-corruption education and/or rehabilitation programs as specified by the ICC.

The ICC ACU interviewed Shakib twice this year, on January 23 and on August 27, in relation to the investigation of the issue.

ICC claimed that in both the interviews, Shakib had admitted to the charges of offences which were brought against him of not reporting to the concerned authority of corrupt approaches that were made to him.

It has been revealed by the ICC that Shakib was approached by an individual named Deepak Agarwal.

The approaches were in relation to the Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe tri-nation ODI series in January 2018 and in relation to an IPL 2018 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab on April 26, 2018.

It has been clearly mentioned that Shakib did not get involved in corrupt actions with Agarwal but had failed to report to the ACU or other concerned authority of the approaches.

“Shakib is a highly experienced international cricketer. He has attended many education sessions and knows his obligations under the Code. He should have reported each of these approaches. Shakib has accepted his errors and cooperated fully with the investigation. He has offered to assist the Integrity Unit in future education, to help younger players to learn from his mistakes. I am happy to accept this offer,” ICC general manager Alex Marshall said in the media release.

Shakib is yet to determine his way ahead while serving the one-year ban from cricket.

It is understood that the Bangladesh cricketer is likely to travel to the United States of America immediately and set the course to return to the game in October next year, probably half way through to the World T20I 2020.

The charges proven against him are as follows:

Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct - in relation to the Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe tri-nation ODI series in January 2018 and/or the 2018 IPL

Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct - in relation to a second approach in respect of the tri-series in January 2018

Article 2.4.4 – Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct - in relation to an IPL 2018 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab on April 26, 2018.
