Samiul, Sonia reign supreme

The major highlights of the opening day though were the two national records in high jump by Julfikar Nayeem Jihan in the men’s event and Jannatul in the women’s category

Samiul Islam and Sonia Akter reigned supreme in the men’s and women’s 100m sprint respectively on the opening day of the two-day long 35th National Junior Athletics Championship at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Friday.

Khulna’s Samiul, who is also a more than useful footballer, clocked 11.41s to win the gold medal ahead of Kurigram’s Mohammad Limon and Natore’s Sultan Ahmed, who finished second and third with timings of 11.5s and 11.53s respectively.

BKSP’s Sonia meanwhile, bagged the gold with a timing of 12.66s ahead of teammate Afria Alin and Shariatpur’s Tania, who ended second and third with timings of 13.42s and 14.07s respectively.

The major highlights of the opening day though were the two national records in high jump by Julfikar Nayeem Jihan in the men’s event and Jannatul in the women’s category.

BKSP’s Jihan posted a score of 1.96m while his teammate Jannatul registered 1.61m.
