Like Sree Gokulam Kerala FC’s Argentine head coach Fernando Varela, the club’s new signing Trinidad and Tobago international Nathaniel Garcia also admitted that his side have the potential to win the historic I-League title next season after kicking off the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup in style.
“I’m really enjoying at the new club,” said Garcia, who signed for the Malabarians at the end of September.
“I think this team have the potential to win the I-League next season because of the way we have trained and played together so far.”

“I score such goals often but this is my first goal for Gokulam. I played four matches (pre-season friendly) but this one is the first competitive game. I can do better. I’m gradually blended with the team. I think there is better result to come,” said the 26-year old.
Gokulam will play their second Group B match Thursday against Malaysian outfit Terengganu FC, who thrashed reigning I-League champion Chennai City 5-3 in the first game.
Garcia usually plays as a defensive midfielder but can play at different positions.
“I adapt to different positions all my life. I can also play as a right back. Me and my coach felt that if I can play as right winger I can contribute more to the team,” he said.

The inclusion of Garcia gave more confidence to Varela in their bid to win the I-League for the first time.
“Garcia is a very fast player and a good shooter. He has the capacity to play in different positions. We are very happy to have him with us because he is helping too much to our local players,” said the coach.
Having been formed in 2017, Gokulam finished ninth last season but most of the current squad members are new and performed well against some of the Indian Super League giants in the pre-season.
They also won the 129th edition of the Durand Cup in their debut appearance in August.
