Afif Hossain made his T20I debut in 2018 against Sri Lanka but was out for nought in that match but Friday, in his second game after almost a year, he became the match-winner

The task was daunting for young Afif Hossain when he came out to bat with Bangladesh struggling on 60 runs for the loss of six wickets, and the 145-run target looking far away.

But the left-hander started his innings with a boundary and it was a confident shot from the left-hander.

That confidence showed in his whole innings as he guided his team close to victory after forming a brilliant 82-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Mosaddek Hossain.

“My plan was to play with my own style and according to the situation. When I came out to bat, they brought an extra player in close in and tried to set an attacking field set-up. I took the chance and tried to score from the beginning. I tried to pick the line, length of the bowler and eventually that happened and I managed to score from the beginning,” Afif said during the post-match press conference at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur Friday.

Afif and Mosaddek’s stand changed the momentum and turned the tide for the Tigers.

Afif struck eight boundaries and a six overall and got out scoring 52 off 26 deliveries.

A brilliant innings from the youngster as, in the end, Bangladesh edged Zimbabwe and avoided a humiliating start after a batting collapse early.

Afif made his T20I debut in 2018 against Sri Lanka but was out for nought in that match but Friday, in his second game after almost a year, he became the match-winner.

Afif said after being dropped last year, his main target was to focus on his game and performing well in the domestic arena.

“After getting dropped, I was not thinking too much about that. I was focused to improve my performance and determined that I need to play well whenever I get the chance, whether in HP team or A team. And in the last few months playing for HP team and A team in some matches helped me to get more experience as we played with good competitive opponents,” he said.

Afif said he was given the permission to play his own game and that’s what he tried to do in this game even when Bangladesh were struggling.

Mosaddek also made a brilliant contribution in their partnership, which eventually turned out to be crucial for the Tigers, but it was Afif really who lit up the SBNCS in a much-needed win for Bangladesh.
