Bangladesh's Shakib al Hasan walks back to the dressing room following the end of day four of their lone Test against Afghanistan in Chittagong Sunday Dhaka Tribune/Md Manik from Chittagong

Shakib al Hasan was well aware of the critical questions he was set to face but when the press conference finished, the media personnel in the port city Sunday were left astonished with the answers of the Bangladesh Test captain

Without an iota of doubt, Bangladesh dressing-room is under humongous pressure. The host are close to losing the lone Test match against Afghanistan at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Bangladesh following a batting failure need 262 runs with four wickets in hand with a day remaining in the game. Under such situation, it is rare for a member of the team voluntarily opting to face the media, but Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan did just that, making his second media appearance in between the Test. Shakib was well aware of the critical questions he was set to face but when the press conference finished, the media personnel in the port city Sunday were left astonished with the answers of the Bangladesh Test captain. Below are the excerpts:

Are you in the press conference to ease pressure off your team mates?

You can say this is a way to ease off pressure from the team mates. But there will always be pressure on the field, as long as you play cricket. You have to accept that. There is no point of thinking that much.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan in Dhaka said the team had the wrong strategy...

It happens when the result goes against you. We couldn’t execute the plan well and that is why we are in this situation. It is now easy to say we had a wrong strategy.

What do you think went wrong for Bangladesh overall in this game?

We did not play wrist spinners well. Both left- and right-arm [wrist spinners] are new to us. So we had to adjust ourselves here. We have taken preparation for them in the nets but until you are successful in the game, that preparation does not help. I do not think there was issue with approach but with execution. You fail to execute when you try to hit the ball with doubt. Coach [Russell Domingo] told us to play with big heart. I felt we were scared in the middle and took unnecessary pressure. At the end of the day this is just a cricket match and it is important to us but this is not everything for us in the world. But sometimes we try to give it all importance and create pressure on ourselves.

Should the players be playing more first-class cricket?

I have not played [National Cricket League or Bangladesh Cricket League] for four years now, and have no problems. We have to understand the real issues of the players. If the issue is because of playing NCL or for not playing NCL, it can be both ways. Playing there can be an issue, that tournament may have easy bowlers to play that a batsman scores 200 very easily not once but four or five times. But coming to international cricket they find it hard to score just four or five runs. We had to detect the real problem. It is wrong to think that one medicine will work for all.

Do you think such matches are set back for Bangladesh cricket?

It is of course disappointing for us that we (are about to lose) to a new Test-playing team. But it is also not right to think that they cannot win just because they are a new team. We have played Tests for 19 years and have won against England who have played the game for 200 years. We need to respect Afghanistan. They have come to a position of winning, playing well in this game. They would have been tested if we could have done well. It is disappointing that we failed to do well.
