The organizers hope to get the electronic timer and starting pistol working this time as the two-day long Trust Bank 15th National Summer Athletics Championship will get underway at the athletic turf of Bangabandhu National Stadium Friday.

Around 500 male and female athletes from different districts, divisions, universities, education boards, BJMC, BKSP and the affiliated service teams are expected to take part in the event containing a total of 36 events, including 14 in the women’s category.

In many of the previous editions including the last one, the electronic timer either was not set up or didn’t work.

Bangladesh Athletics Federation president SM Ali Kabir said at the pre-tournament presser Wednesday, “There were some mechanical defects last time but this time we are working to prepare the electronic timer. If everything is okay, hopefully the events will be held through photo finishing.”

Informing that 32 teams have so far made their entry, newly elected general secretary of the BAF Abdur Rakib Montu hoped to uncover new promising faces from the event.

“There are some new teams like RUET, Agricultural University of Mymensingh. It is one kind of a trial for the South Asian Games in December. The new talents from this event will be included for the ongoing SA Games camp,” said Rakib.

The organizers also announced that they would provide Tk5,000 to the record holders of the event.
