Bangladesh Cricket Board High Performance team coach Simon Helmet believes the upcoming matches against Sri Lanka High Performance side will be a great opportunity for the young cricketers in their development and to become ready for the next level, the national team.
BCB has already declared the squad for the three-match one-day series against Sri Lanka Emerging team.
Nazmul Hossain Shanto has been appointed captain while Yasir Ali Chowdhury will be his deputy.
The first match will be played Sunday at BKSP.
“The boys have played a lot of cricket before the Eid. They have their break. Now they need to get things to swing. Obviously, it is very important for us to keep developing. The great thing to play in an U-23 tournament is to give the players the opportunity to help them get ready to play for the national team,” said Helmot at the BCB academy premises Friday.
“I want the players to get a good opportunity to perform against unfamiliar international opposition. When you play for the national team you play against the players you don't know very well in unfamiliar surrounds. We will play in the known condition but we will play against the bowlers, against the batsmen we might not know very well,” he added.

Helmot thinks the players have developed to a certain extent but there are still areas they can improve and the upcoming series will be a good test for them.
“I am happy with their development. But they still need to improve. When they will get more opportunities they will be ready. They need physical preparation, in the feeling, in a backfoot play, in a concentration to the ball to ensure when they play for the national side, it will not be new. The feeling will not be new. The opposition might be new, the crowd might be new, but the aim should not be new,” Helmot explained.
Helmot said these players are being prepared for the national team and some day with their improved skill and performance, some of these players will become key members of the national team set-up.
But to achieve that, these young group of players need to work and improve certain areas and that’s what the HP team are trying to do over the years, said Helmot.
“Every time we have A team match, HP match, U-19 match we are preparing a player for the national team. No matter what the competition is. Everything else, training, physical preparation, mental strategy; Everything is developing a player for the national team. We want to support the national team as much as we can. We need support Mushfiqur [Rahim], we need to support Tamim [Iqbal], we need to support Shakib [al Hasan]. It will make Bangladesh cricket strong. It will help Bangladesh win Tests abroad. It will help Bangladesh finish high in the tournaments, whatever the tournament. Match experiences, skill development, fielding and strength and conditioning - these are the four things we need to keep improving. That will help Bangladesh,” Helmot concluded.
