Bangladesh will play an international friendly against Cambodia on Saturday, March 9 and for that, they will fly on Wednesday.

The squad that is travelling will however be without experienced Abahani midfielders Mamunul Islam and Sohel Rana. Arambagh goalkeeper Mazharul Islam Himel and forward Ariful Rahman will also miss the trip.

Bangladesh head coach Jamie Day revealed in a press conference that Mamunul and Ariful have failed to make the squad due to injury.

In the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League Nabib Newaz Jibon has scored six goals from nine games for Abahani and will be in the squad. Another forward in the squad, Motin Miah has scored four goals so far for Bashundhara Kings.

“Jibon and Motin Miah have been playing really well in the league and they’re both among the goals. The forward line looks stronger than it did before. If they can score against Cambodia, the entire outlook of the Bangladesh team will change,” Day said on Tuesday.

After the match against Cambodia, the team will head back home and then fly for Qatar on March 11. They will have a training camp there and then head to Bahrain for the AFC Under-23 Championship Qualifiers. Day revealed that the team heading for Cambodia will mostly comprise of Under-23 players to better prepare for the qualifiers.

“The game against Cambodia is very important and we are going there with two aims. One of them is to play well and win the game, and the other is to gain momentum and experience for the matches in Bahrain. Even though that will be an Under-23 tournament, a lot of players from the national team will be there. So it will be very important for their performance against Cambodia to be good,” the head coach explained.
