Khulna Titans suffered their sixth defeat in this season’s Bangladesh Premier League as they lost against Chittagong Viking by 26 runs at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium yesterday.
With this game, the Sylhet phase of the BPL came to an end.
How the action unfolded
Chasing a huge 215-run target, the highest this season, Khulna managed to score 188 losing eight wickets in their stipulated 20 overs.
Captain Mahmudullah was the top-scorer for his side with 50 off 26 balls with three fours and four sixes.
David Wiese scored 40 off 20 deliveries.
Abu Jayed Rahi took three wickets for Chittagong.
Earlier, asked to bat first, Chittagong posted a massive 214, second highest total in BPL history.
The game changers
It was a combined batting effort from the Vikings batsmen to take the score past 200.
Yasir Ali scored 54 off 36 balls, Mushfiqur Rahim made 52 off 33 while Dasun Shanaka scored 42 off 17 balls.
Wiese bagged two wickets for Khulna.
KEY MOMENTS
Expensive Malinga
The experienced Lasith Malinga was expensive as the pacer conceded 44 runs in his quota of four overs.
He could manage just six dot balls in his 24 ball-spell as the fast bowler with a slinging action was not able to bowl enough deliveries on the block hole.
It was a good batting pitch in Sylhet.
But choosing to field first after winning the toss, the Khulna camp definitely expected more from the legendary Sri Lankan.
Shanaka fires in death overs
Yasir and Mushfiq gave the Vikings’ lower middle-order batsmen the perfect stage to exploit the death overs as Shanaka stepped up.
The Sri Lankan played an explosive innings, studded with three fours and four sixes.
Shanaka and Najibullah Zadran added 44 off the last 14 balls to finish the innings in style.
Mahmudullah-Taylor pair give Titans hope
Khulna lost three early wickets while chasing a massive target.
The score was 18 for three when Mahmudullah came out to bat in the second ball of the fourth over.
Mahmudullah and Brendan Taylor then stitched together 68 runs for the fourth wicket partnership, off 35 balls, before Taylor (28 off 16 balls) got cleaned up bowled by Nayeem Hasan in the first ball of the 10th over.
In the next over, Mahmudullah also got bowled after scoring exactly fifty, and Khulna’s chance of overcoming a mammoth target faded away.
What this result means
Khulna remained bottom of the points table with two points from seven matches.
They will face Rangpur Riders Tuesday in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Chittagong have claimed their fourth win from five games, and they will face Dhaka Dynamites Monday.
