Ranveer Singh plays Kapil Dev in '83' trailer

The film will receive a wide release on December 24

The trailer for director Kabir Khan's sports drama “83” dropped on Tuesday, November 30, featuring Ranveer Singh as former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev and Deepika Padukone as his wife Romi Dev. 

The plot revolves around the Indian cricket team’s triumph in the 1983 World Cup over the previously unchallenged champions, West Indies. 

“On 25th of June 1983, the Lord’s Cricket Ground witnessed one of the biggest underdog stories in the history of sports. Fourteen inspired men fought against all odds and orchestrated India’s greatest sporting triumph by beating the twice-over World Champions West Indies! This victory put India on the map again and provided the platform to make India the greatest cricketing nation in the world today. Armed with self-belief and conviction, one man guided the team to a historic victory,” reads the official synopsis.

The star-studded cast also includes Pankaj Tripathi as PR Man Singh, Tahir Raj Bhasin as Sunil Gavaskar, Jiiva as Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Saqib Saleem as Mohinder Amarnath,  Jatin Sarna as Yashpal Sharma, Chirag Patil as Sandeep Patil, Dinker Sharma as Kirti Azad, Nishant Dahiya as Roger Binny and others.

The trailer sparked emotional reactions among fans who praised Ranveer’s portrayal of Kapil Dev and the dramatic depiction of the 1983 World Cup.

"Literally had tears in my eyes after watching this trailer. Can't imagine how special this 1983 World Cup would have meant for them," one user wrote. "Goosebumps and tears, I am sure no one would able to hold their tears while seeing this trailer and the movie for sure," another said.
