The documentary will focus on the #freeBritney movement which resurfaced on social media after a decade of creating small waves regarding a legal arrangement called ‘conservatorship’ that controls most aspects of the singer’s life
The official trailer for ‘Britney vs Spears’ dropped on Wednesday, September 22.
The new Netflix documentary will investigate the pop icon's conservatorship status that has allegedly curbed her autonomy and sparked heated discussions in the music industry.
The documentary is directed by Erin Lee Carr, who previously had success with “How to Fix a Drug Scandal” and “I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter."
The documentary will focus on the #freeBritney movement which resurfaced on social media after a decade of creating small waves regarding a legal arrangement called ‘conservatorship’ that controls most aspects of the singer’s life.
Even though the 38-year old singer seems to lead a healthy life now, leaving behind her notorious reputation as a troublemaker, many fans have speculated for years that she is not ‘free’ due to the legal guardianship arrangement in place.
Since 2008, the court approved to let the singer’s father and lawyer control her assets and make financial decisions for her, which has recently led to a debate about human rights and mental health.
The court decision to deem the singer unable to make decisions for herself was taken on the basis of Spears’ previously well-documented mental health issues.
Spears’ conservatorship drew attention after the runaway success of FX documentary “The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears." Now Netflix is trying its hand on lifting the veil from Spears’ conservatorship.
