The pandemic has been a cause of great distress for the film industries around the world, including Hollywood, which is still grappling with Covid restrictions, limited theatre capacity and the formidable rise of the streaming platforms. Yet, a few good blockbusters are finally coming to the theatres next month as vaccine roll-out picks up pace.

Here are the top five releases of August:

Val

Release Date: August 6

Who is Val Kilmer? He's Batman. He's Iceman. He's Jim Morrison. And he's a lifelong filmmaker. This documentary centres on the daily life of actor Val Kilmer featuring never-before-seen footage spanning 40 years.

The Suicide Squad

Release Date: August 6

Our only hope to save the world is a bunch of supervillains -- what could go wrong? Supervillains Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker and a collection of nutty cons at Belle Reve prison join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X as they are dropped off at the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

Annette

Release Date: August 20

Los Angeles, today. Henry (Adam Driver) is a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor who falls in love with Ann (Marion Cotillard), a world-renowned opera singer. Under the spotlight, they form a passionate and glamorous couple. The birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious little girl with an exceptional destiny, will turn their lives upside down.

Don't Breathe 2

Release Date: August 13

The sequel is set in the years following the initial deadly home invasion, where Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang) lives in quiet solace until his past sins catch up to him.

Candyman

Release Date: August 27

Oscar-winner Jordan Peele unleashes a fresh take on the blood-chilling urban legend that your friend's older sibling probably told you about at a sleepover: Candyman. Rising filmmaker Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) directs this contemporary incarnation of the cult classic. A "spiritual sequel" to the horror film Candyman (1992), DaCosta’s new feature returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began.
