Director Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy, starring Ethan Hawke and July Delpy in lead roles, has duly stood the test of time and been proven one of the most enduring series of romance films.
In 2020, Ethan Hawke revealed that a fourth “Before” movie was in development and Julie Delpy was in talks to reprise her role.
However, in a recent interview with Telerama, Delpy put a stop to all speculations about the new film.
The actress revealed that she had already turned down the project due to her plans for early retirement and her frustration with the film industry.
“I often think about leaving the industry,” Delpy said. “A year and a half ago, I was not far from it. The hell I went through to produce my film [‘My Zoe’] had exhausted me. I said no to Richard Linklater for the fourth part of the ‘Before’ films. I thought that maybe I could go back to school. I would make a very good doctor, for example. You give me three symptoms, and I tell you what you are suffering from…But I like to create, to tell stories; it’s stronger than me.”
Although the actress has chosen not to retire, she said she is not coming back for the new “Before” movie.
“I’m still struggling. Nonstop. I have so many movies in my drawers that will never be shot, if you only knew! I’m fed up.”
Unless Delpy changes her mind, plans to film a fourth “Before” film are shelved for now.
