Shakeela, an adult film star born in a conservative Muslim family, dominated the South Indian industry in the ’90s
New poster of Richa Chadha starrer Shakeela was released on Monday, November 30, showing the actor in a sultry red sari and pink sunglasses with a gun in her hand.
The biopic follows the career of Shakeela, an adult film star dominating the South Indian industries in the ’90s and 2000s.
Richa plays the leading adult star in the upcoming Christmas release, helmed by Indrajit Lankesh. The biopic will explore how Shakeela, born in a conservative Muslim family, became the most prominent face of B grade South Indian films, despite the racism, body-shaming and bigotry directed towards her.
Shakeela, who began her career at the age of 16, starred in more than 250 films.
Director Indrajit said in a statement: “Shakeela is my passion project. I have known her since 2003 when I worked with her. Her rags-to-riches story caught my attention. I did some extensive personal interviews with her and came to know so much about the person that she is behind that image of a star.”
About casting Richa, he said, “I knew that it is only Richa who can nail the part. This film will help youngsters who aspire to be part of the film industry understand that there is more to the overlying glitz and glamour.”
Pankaj Tripathi and Malayalam actor Rajeev Pillai will also play supporting characters in the new film.
