‘What a run’ tweets Hasan Minhaj as Netflix cancels Patriot Act

The final episode debuted on June 26

Update : 19 Aug 2020, 06:46 PM

Netflix weekly talk show Patriot Act will not return for a seventh season, announced American comedian Hasan Minhaj on Tuesday.

Two years ago, on October 28, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj debuted on Netflix, and only a year later, Minhaj bagged a Peabody award for the critically acclaimed talk show.

After 40 episodes over six seasons covering a wide range of social and political issues, the Emmy award-winning show was canceled by Netflix. The final episode debuted on June 26.

Minhaj wrote: “What a run! Patriot Act has come to an end. I got to work with the best writers, producers, researchers, and animators in the game."

Apart from Minhaj’s show, Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show, Turn Up Charlie, V-Wars and October Faction would not be renewed by Netflix this year. Presumably, the viewership could not make up for the cost of a show like the Patriot Act.

Other similar Netflix talk shows including Chelsea Handler’s “Chelsea,” “The Break With Michelle Wolf,” and “The Joel McHale Show With Joel McHale” did not succeed to last more than a couple seasons either.

Minhaj, who got married in 2015, also added on Twitter, “My two babies were born and grew up with the show. Thanks to Netflix and everyone who watched. Now it’s time to return these screens to Best Buy.”

Fans are heartbroken over the announcement; many pointing out that the talk show was canceled at a very ‘unfortunate’ time, given the increased racial tension in the country and the approaching general election.
