"I have always been a nervous actor"

Renowned actor, cultural personality, and Member of Parliament Asaduzzaman Noor will act in a brand new theatre production after almost 17 years.

The play titled, Kalo Joler Kabbo, is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, featuring Asaduzzaman Noor as Shylock. Popular actor Aupee Karim will also appear in the play.

This play, which is a part of a brand new theatre festival, Notuner Utsab 2019, will premiere on Friday at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).

Kalo Joler Kabbo is a Nagorik Natya Sampradaya production and the renowned theatre group is also the organizer of the festival.

Directed by Pantha Shahriar, Asaduzzaman Noor will play the role of Bhangari who buys and sells broken things from a shipyard.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune's Showtime, Asaduzzaman Noor said: "I am acting in a new drama after 17 years.

"Pantha told me I would make this play, if you agree to be a part of it, so I told him to develop the script. After reading it, I liked it which is totally in context of our country. While adapting The Merchant of Venice, the struggles of the working class of our society have been reflected which added a different dimension to the story.

"I hope the audience will like it, as all of us are working hard and we are bringing it to the stage in a short time. I am a little nervous; I have always been a nervous actor."

Talking about his character, the veteran actor said: "Although, my character is inspired by Shylock, it is totally a Bangladeshi character; I am developing the character my way with the help from the director.”

Aupee Karim, who is playing Poddo in the play, is completely following the director's guidance in order to develop her character. Aupee told us: " I completely tried to follow director Pantha bhai's instructions to prepare the character. I followed the director blindly.

Director Pantha Shahriar shared his thoughts on the adaptation with us. He informed: "We didn't want to do The Merchant of Venice, as a writer I tried to bring out the zest of this class in the backdrop of my country.

"While I was thinking of where to depict such darkness and mentality, I thought of the shipbreaking yard as it is a very chaotic industry.

"I tried to tell the story of my country in the shadow of The Merchant of Venice.

When he was asked how long it took him to finish the script he replied: "An idea stays with you for a long time, in fact, for the last 3 to 4 years I wanted to adapt the play, finally, Nagorik boosted my idea and from that point in about 3 months I finished the script.
