Bhoddornok, Roshpuran staged on the opening day
Industrial Development Leasing Company of Bangladesh Limited (IDLC) has organized a five-day theatre festival which began on Tuesday .
With a motto to celebrate the heritage of theatre in Bangladesh, the festival began on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital.
The inaugural ceremony of the second edition of the theatre festival was held at 5pm at the National Theatre Hall of BSA.
Cultural personality Asaduzzaman Noor, IDLC CEO & MD Arif Khan, and prominent playwrights and theatre artistes were present on the occasion.
The inaugural ceremony was followed by the performance of eminent dance artiste Rachel Priyanka.
On the first day of the festival, the play Bhoddornok, an adapted version of Moliere’s The Bourgeois Gentleman, by theatre troupe Natyachakra was staged at 8:30pm in the same hall. The play is directed by Golam Sarwar.
The Department of Theatre and Performance Studies of the University of Dhaka (DU) staged its play Roshpuran, directed by Dr Ahmedul Kabir, at 6:30pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA.
A total of 10 prominent theatre troupes are scheduled to stage their plays during the festival.
The participating troupes are— the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies of DU, Natyachakra, Tarua, Padatik Natya Sangsad, Shobdo Natyacharcha Kendra, Samay Natyadal, Dhaka Theatre, Arshinagar, Jahangirnagar University Drama and Dramatics Department Theatre, and Nagorik Natya Sampraday.
Each day, two plays will be staged at the two different venues of BSA.
The entry fee,which is Tk100 for each person, will be donated to the Theatre Federation Welfare Trust for the development of group theatre.
