British musician Jennifer Reid mesmerized the audience with her brilliant and strong presentation of broadside ballads on the first day of Dhaka Lit Fest (DLF) 2019. Her ballads, which are mostly from the Victorian Era, captivated young audiences during her performance on the Nazrul Stage.

Furthermore, she compared Bangladeshi ballads with Lancashire ballads and noted how similar they are in terms of expressing the notions of the industrial revolution, urbanization and much more.

Jennifer’s performance was very lively and interactive, mentioning different forms suchbhatiyali, bhawaiya and other genres of Bangladeshi folk music, during the session.

Jennifer also talked about Bhupen Hazarika and his music. One of the brilliant performances from the session was that of “Weaver of Wellbrook,” which is a traditional Lancashire weaving song. She sang the songs from the book, “Folk Songs & Ballads of Lancashire.”

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime, Jennifer said: “I never had any official training in this but I am one of those very few people who is still practicing these old Victorian ballads which represent the industrial revolution in Lancashire.”

“I did a lot of research and came to know about Bangladeshi folk music in around 2016 and since then, I have been coming back and forth, whenever I get funding,” she said while talking about her knowledge of Bangladeshi folk music.

“I am trying to know more about the folk music here with the help of some local friends. It, indeed, has been a good experience,” she added.

Jennifer Reid is a performer of 19th century Industrial Revolution broadside ballads and Lancashire dialect work song. However, her interest in music and history has brought her to Bangladesh. Since 2016, she has been visiting Bangladesh and doing research on Bangladeshi folk music.
