Alpha will compete in the foreign language film category
Directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu, Alpha will represent Bangladesh in the 92nd Academy Awards, popularly known as Oscars.
Alpha will compete in the foreign language film category.
Three films were submitted in a bid to attend Oscars in the Foreign Language Film category. Those three films are Sanatan Golpo, Fagun Haway and Alpha.
Federation of Film Societies and Oscars Preview Committee Chairman Habibur Rahman Khan Nine revealed that members of the preview committee nominated “Alpha” for this year’s Oscars.
The next Oscars will be presented on February 9, 2020 at Dolby Theatre of Hollywood in Los Angeles, USA.
Shameem Akhtar, an independent film-maker and a member of Oscar selection committee told the Dhaka Tribune Showtime: "Alpha was the only film that had filmic treatments among the submitted films and you know every year we need to send a film at Oscars to meet the terms and conditions of Oscar committee.
“From that angle we selected Alpha as it has its own language and creative aspect was highlighted. Alpha has Bangladeshi inputs but I don’t know what would happen if we had multiple choices. So far that was our best option,” she added.
When she was asked as Alpha is available on YouTube, if it would be a problem for the film she replied: “We don’t know about it, we selected the film as it meets the criteria and my lookout was the same for Alpha.”
Alpha was released in Bangladeshi theatres on April 26. The film revolves around the life of a rickshaw painter. His adaptation with this metro city and his psychological duels are portrayed in the film.
The cast of the film includes ATM Shamsuzzaman, Doel, Isharat Nishat and others. Young actor Alamgir Kabir plays the lead character in the film.
This is the third feature film directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff, who made his directorial debut with liberation war film Ekatturer Jishu in 1992. His second film Guerrilla released in 2011.
