'Every animal has sense of pain and do not hurt them while bringing them home from the cattle markets'
Acclaimed Bangladeshi actor Jaya Ahsan has recently posted her concern about animal welfare during Eid-ul-Azha. She posted this on her verified Facebook fan page on Sunday afternoon, the day before Eid.
She wrote: “Be humane towards animals. Unnecessarily hurting animals is immoral and punishable by law according to the Animal Welfare Bill 2019.
“Every animal has sense of pain and do not hurt them while bringing them home from the cattle markets,” she added.
The Bangladesh Parliament passed the Animal Welfare Bill 2019 back in July, with significantly stricter penalties for cruelty to animals compared to the previous colonial-era Cruelty to Animal Act of 1920.
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock M Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru placed the bill, intended to stop cruelty towards animals, ensure responsibility for their welfare, and define the duties of their owners.
The bill was unanimously passed by voice votes, with Deputy Speaker Fazley Rabbi Miah in the chair.
The Animal Welfare Bill 2019 was placed in Parliament on March 10 this year, after it received cabinet clearance in February 2017.
