Bangladesh’s Sadia Khalid to attend Cannes as Fipresci jury

Sadia has published numerous writings as a film critic, and also teaches film at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, and Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute (BCTI)

Bangladeshi film activist, scholar, and critic, Sadia Khalid Reeti has been invited to attend the 2019 Cannes Film Festival as a jury for the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci). She is the second Bangladeshi film critic and first Bangladeshi female to earn this honour. 

Alongside Sadia, Fipresci has also appointed two French critics and a critic each from the countries- Portugal, Denmark, Norway, United States, Belgium, and Israel.

The 72nd annual Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to be held from May 14 to 25. Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu will serve as the event’s jury president.

Sadia Khalid Reeti, a screenwriting grad from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has been an active member of International Film Critic Association of Bangladesh (IFCAB), which is the Bangladeshi equivalent of Fipresci. Two years later, she did become a member of Fipresci.

She published numerous writings as a film critic, and also teaches film at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, and Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute (BCTI).

Sadia had been attending international and local film festivals as a jury member. In the last two years, she attended Italy’s Religion Today Film Festival, India’s Siliguri Shorts and Documentary Fest, Nepal’s Human Rights Film Festival, and Dhaka International Film Festival, as a jury.

Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime asked her about her recent milestone and she said: “Attending Cannes Film Festival as a jury is a huge honour for me. I feel lucky to represent Bangladesh on this global stage, as well representing female filmmakers and activists.”   

Previously, Internationally renowned Bangladeshi film critic, Ahmed Muztaba Zamal attended the 2002 Cannes Film Festival as a jury for Fipresci. He also attended the festival in 2005 and 2009 as a Fipresci jury.

This is the first time in 10 years a Bangladeshi will attend Cannes as a jury for Fipresci. Sadia is also the first female jury member from Bangladesh at this prestigious film festival.
