British actor Albert Finney dies at 82

Albert Finney achieved success as a 'Shakespearean' actor before breaking into the film industry

Oscar nominated British actor Albert Finney died on Friday, according to family sources. He was 82.  

A statement from a family spokesman read: "Albert Finney, aged 82, passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side. The family request privacy at this sad time." 

Albert Finney achieved success as a “Shakespearean” actor before breaking into the film industry. 

He was a recipient of BAFTA, Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Awards. 

Finney was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor four times- for his character in “Tom Jones (1963),” “Murder on the Orient Express (1974),” “The Dresser (1983),” and “Under the Volcano (1984).”

He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Erin Brockovich (2000).”

In 2002, Finney acted as Winston Churchill in the BBC–HBO television biographical film, “The Gathering Storm” for which he received a number of accolades.
