Internationally renowned Bangladeshi filmmaker and producer Arifur Rahman’s horror web series “Otopor Joya” is set to release on the digital content streaming platform iflix. The first trailer of the series was launched at a public event at Dhanmondi’s Rabindra Sarobar on Friday afternoon. The cast and crew of the series were present at the promotional event organized by Ujjiban, a social and behavioral change communication project by USAID.
The four episode series is a co-production of the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, Goopy Bagha Productions Limited and Bhooter Raja Productions.
Dhaka Tribune’s Showtime contacted the project’s director Arifur Rahman and inquiredhow this series was created. He said: “I always wanted to work on the horror and thriller genre and my friend Anish John’s (who is an internationally renowned sound designer and recently worked on Netflix’s ‘Sacred Games,’ ‘Ghoul’ and our last film ‘Kingdom of Clay Subjects’) work fuelled that thirst even more as horror or thriller genres are sound-design based work. Apart from filmmaking I also work on social AV projects and there is little scope to work on these genres in social or communication projects in Bangladesh. I can guarantee that this is the first time in Bangladesh that a sensitive social health project has been portrayed through a horror series. My main goal as the director of the project was to raise awareness in the new generation about this particular health issue without directly indicating to the audience about any social message.”
“I previously worked with John Hopkins in several projects and they asked me to make a web series on this health issue and I pitched them the horror web series concept. At first they were skeptical but after I submitted the script they said that this was really amazing. After shooting and submitting the first rough cut tothem,we, the whole team behind this project, felt that this was a huge success for us though it was a pilot project. Later, John Hopkins collaborated with iflix in its distribution and decided to launch this unique project on their platform. This is also the first time a health communication project like this will be distributed via a major entertainment distribution platform of the region. So we think that all the experiments and hard work we put into this were successful,” he added.
The horror web series, featuring Nusrat Imrose Tisha and Fazlur Rahman Babu in lead roles, will start streaming on iflix on October 25.
Arifur Rahman was the producer behind the internationally acclaimed and successful Bangladeshi films like Bijon Imtiaz’s “Kingdom of Clay Subjects” and Abdullah Mohammad Saad’s “Live from Dhaka.”
