Mosharraf Karim: Maybe what I wanted to say was not clear to all
Popular Bangladeshi actor Mosharraf Karim apologized to his fans after a recent backlash on social media regarding his new show “Jago Bangladesh.” He took to Facebook and apologized to his fans and followers for it. The celebrated actor, who is hosting a TV show for the first time, was criticized by a large number of netizens for allegedly making statements hurting the religious sentiment of people in an episode. They demanded an apology from Mosharraf Karim for making the statement on the show that is related to social issues and awareness. In the show, he said: “Why can’t a woman wear what she wants? And if the attire is a problem, then what is the reason behind the rape of a seven year old or a woman wearing a burqa? What is the logic behind that? Is there any logic?” The other one was his response to a girl who said she had faced harrassment for the way she dressed “This is a case of a person unable to fight his own urges and blaming your dress instead.” After the airing of this episode hundreds and thousands of posts and comments on social media started asking the actor for an apology for hurting the religious sentiments of people of the country. The comments accused Karim of insulting the veil, which is mandated through the Quran, and that he should apologise to the nation before its too late. Karim posted an apology and clarification from his verified Facebook profile on Thursday night. He wrote: “A lot of you have been hurt by my remarks on a show I host on Channel 24. I deeply apologise for that. Maybe what I wanted to say was not clear to all. I believe in decency of ones' attire and that is also important. But that was not mentioned there. I have no intention to hurt any religious sentiment. It was an unintentional mistake. I am very sorry. Everyone please do forgive me.”   After publishing this post another large group of netizens criticised his stance for apologising, which according to them, legitimised the rape of children. The 13 episode show “Jago Bangladesh” currently airing on Channel 24 is inspired from US based show “TEDX” and India’s “Satyamev Jayate” hosted by Aamir Khan. Each episode of the show deals with social issues in Bangladesh like child marriage, autism, traffic jam, women’s menstruation issues, child rape, the third sex and pollution. Karim recently told the press that people are reacting without watching the whole show. He plead with them to watch the whole show and also said many of them were overreacting without hearing the whole story. The shows creator Arif A Ahnaf recently told the press that the people who are reacting have watched excerpts of the show.
