Who is the biggest of the Khans? This has always been a matter of great dispute among Bollywood fans both within and outside India. Although the relationship between the two megastars appears to have mellowed these days, their thorny past continues to fuel the rivalry among fans.
Seen promoting each others' films and even appearing in cameos, the Khans seem to have buried the hatchet for good. But the restless fight over their celebrity stature within their fandom is never ending.
To resolve the never ending quibble (or perhaps to add fire to the flame), Forbes has once again released its India Celebrity 100 list for 2017. Despite the subdued box office performance of his film “Tubelight,” Salman, the “Bhai” of India, topped the list for the second consecutive year.
Based on a renewed methodology focusing only on a celebrity’s gross earnings (the previous combination included both ‘fame’ and ‘earnings’), the 51-year-old actor stands tall at the first position with an income of Rs232.83 crore, while his counterpart the “King of Romance” Shah Rukh Khan came second with Rs170.5 crore.
The third position is occupied by Virat Kohli. The Indian national cricket team skipper made Rs100.72 crore in 2017.
Despite their constant positions in the list for the second consecutive year, the cumulative earnings of three of India's biggest celebrities has declined by almost 20%. Compared to the Rs626.52 crore total of last year, the sum total this year went down to Rs504.05 crore.
With an income of Rs98.25 crore, “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” actor Akshay Kumar clinched the fifth position on the list, while Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar rounded the Top five with Rs82.50 crore.
The other Khan of Bollywood, Ameer Khan came in at sixth. With his blockbuster hit “Dangal” and critically acclaimed “Secret Superstar,” Ameer earned a total of Rs68.75 crore in 2017.
Among other Bollywood stars, Priyanka Chpora is the only female actor to make it up to top 10, securing at seventh with a Rs68 crore income, likely owing to her Hollywood and American TV stardom. Hrithik Roshan and Ranveer Singh rounded up the top 10 with earnings of Rs63.12 crore and Rs62.63 crore, respectively.
