Bollywood actress Twinkle Khanna has expressed her support for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film Padmavati, despite criticism of the film from certain quarters in India.
“And as far as #Padmavati is concerned I wish it is the biggest hit ever as that would be the befitting rejoinder to all these loony threats,” Twinkle tweeted, after a number of Rajput groups condemned the film and called for Deepika Padukone’s head for her portrayal of Queen Padmavati.
The groups claim the film distorts history and demeans the honour of the Queen. In the face of such criticism, Padmavati’s initial deadline for release had to be pushed back.
Salman Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor had all previously expressed their support for the film.
Meanwhile, at the International Film Festival of India on Monday, the film’s lead actor Shahid Kapoor said: “I believe that the film will release. I believe that this process is difficult and I went through a similar process with Udta Punjab. I eventually saw the film come out and I eventually saw the film loved and celebrated.”
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati stars Deepika Padukone alongside Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, with Aditi Rao Hydari and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles.
