‘Padmavati’ defers release dates amid backlash
Viacom18, the production company for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s new film, “Padmavati,” has pushed back its initial release date, following a backlash from the right-wing groups in India. In a recent statement, Viacom18 said: “Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the studio behind 'Padmavati' has voluntarily deferred the release date of the film from December 1st 2017.” They also added that they have “created a beautiful cinematic masterpiece on 'Padmavati' that captures Rajput valour, dignity and tradition in all its glory. The film is an eloquent portrayal of a tale that will fill every Indian with pride and showcase our country's story-telling prowess across the globe. “We are a responsible, law-abiding corporate citizen and have the highest respect and regard for the law of the land and all our institutions and statutory bodies including the Central Board of Film Certification.” Both the director and the lead star, Deepika Padukone, have been facing rage for allegedly distorting history and demeaning the honour of Rajpur queen Rani Padmavati. Even though the director has been vocal denying the allegations, the protests against the film continue to spread across the country. Padukone has also been a voice of reason and refused to bend down in front of the fringe, which demands her head - as a bounty - for playing the queen revered by Rajputs. She has repeatedly said in recent interviews that “Padmavati” is a film India would be proud of. Karni Sena and many other organisations have claimed that they will not let the film be released on December 1, 2017. In response, the actor said that she believes nothing can stop the release of Bhansali’s magnum opus. In a recent interview with the Mumbai Mirror, the actor - when asked what is her reaction to detractors demanding her head or wanting to cut off her nose - replied: “Well, at this point, as a woman, an artist and a citizen of this country I feel angry, I feel let down and I also find it amusing.” When asked if she felt scared, Padukone replied: “I will never feel scared. Fear is an emotion I have never identified with.” “Padmavati” is an upcoming Indian epic period drama film based in the epic poem “Padmavat” (1540) by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Padukone helms the titular role, alongside Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khilji, with Aditi Rao Hydari and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles.
