The beauty company CoverGirl is well known in the market for its diversity. Months after signing James Charles as its first cover boy and Nure Afia as its first cover girl in a hijab, CoverGirl debuted its newest ambassador - Maye Musk, who is 69 years old and has been modeling for more than five decades. The news came from CoverGirl’s recent official announcements.
Musk has more than 50 years of accomplishments, but the last few have been particularly impressive from a modeling perspective. Over her long modeling career, she appeared on the covers of New York magazine and Elle Canada; starred in campaigns for Target, Virgin America and Clinique; and has been photographed for Vogue Italia, Vogue Korea and Vanity Fair.
But recently, starting from 2013, Musk starred in Beyoncé’s music video “Haunted” and last year signed a contract with IMG, the agency that represents the models Alek Wek, Gigi Hadid and Joan Smalls. At this New York Fashion Week, Musk walked in two shows.
She is the mother of three successful children - Elon Musk, founder of PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX; Tosca Musk, a filmmaker; and Kimbal Musk, a founder of The Kitchen Community, a nonprofit that builds gardens in schools.
When asked about how she felt about being the newest ambassador of CoverGirl in an interview with The New York Times, she said that she loves the fact that CoverGirl wants to embrace diversity and that she’s the oldest woman to become a CoverGirl. She also said that she feels great when 70 year old women see her and feel that they too can be a model for a beauty campaign at this age.
She said, “Aging has been good for me. You develop confidence, you’re able to handle the knocks a little easier. I model for my age. I’m not trying to hide it and say I’m 50. I’m so proud that I’m going be 70.”
She also stated that she never dyed her hair, always loved the way she is naturally and never tried to hide her age from anyone - she has always been proud of it.
