Bad news for Gypsy fans. Naomi Watts starring the psycho-drama featuring a bored, voyeuristic therapist will not return for a second season.
The announcement of cancellation came just six weeks after its premiere, making it the quickest Netflix show to be terminated.
The streaming giant is yet to provide a reason for this swift withdrawal, however it’s not so difficult to venture a safe guess as to why Gypsy got withdrawed so soon given Netflix’s recently adjusted programming outlook.
Reed Hastings, Netflix founder and CEO, had explained in May that Netflix is actually aiming to cancel more shows as he saw it, the company’s “hit ratio” was too high. He said, “We’ve cancelled very few shows. I’m always pushing the content team: ‘We have to take more risks, you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.’”
This new strategy of Netflix has, so far, led to withdraws including The Get Down, Girlboss, and Sense8 — the latter of which had a deeply devoted fanbase that mourned its loss and petitioned for its return.
Followed by the cancellation, Naomi Watts wrote on Instagram, “Sending so much love and thanks to the incredible cast and crew on #gypsynetflix we had a blast. @rubin.lisa @lizacliza #netflix”
She also wrote referring to her role Jean Holloway in another post, “Jean took it to another level #gypsy #ontherun #dianeslastlaugh #peaceout”
While Lisa Rubin, the show’s creator wrote, “Oh, how I’ll miss these faces – and characters – but privileged and honoured to have created this show. And worked with such an incredible cast and crew, along the way. Thank you to the loyal fans who have fallen for Jean and been so supportive. On to the next thrilling adventure... x #gypsynetflix”
